South Island Aluminium Windows & Doors | UNO

Written by UNO Windows & Doors | Nov 3, 2026, 4:09:17 AM

Yes. UNO Windows & Doors manufactures aluminium windows and doors at its factory in Hāwera and delivers them nationwide, so a South Island project can be supplied just as reliably as one down the road from the factory. UNO's commercial and multi-residential projects in Christchurch, Timaru and Queenstown show how it works in practice, from a 15-unit commercial headquarters to a 226-home development with 1,920 window and door units.

South Island commercial projects

Attika HQ, Timaru

The finished Attika HQ in Timaru.

When Attika built its new headquarters in Timaru, Canterbury, it turned to UNO, a long-standing partner after the Cleanline Tasman facility. Attika led the project as architect, and UNO supplied and installed the windows and doors.

UNO's scope went beyond the joinery: detail and specification support at the early design stage, configuration advice to support H1 calculations and value engineering, shop drawings, and a PS1 for the façade connection to the structural steel, along with a construction R-value certificate for H1 compliance.

  • Client / type: Attika (architect), commercial headquarters
  • Units: 15 (Flushglaze panels, automatic sliding doors, bifold doors)
  • Suite: UNO Commercial Flushglaze
  • Glass: Grey Tinted Low-E Lightbridge double glazing, argon fill
  • Colour: Matt Flaxpod powdercoat

Sir Gil Simpson Drive, Christchurch

This commercial office development was built by Tuatara Structures and designed by M Three. With a largely glazed façade, the team needed early help with thermal performance and overheating risk.

UNO was brought in at the specification and detailing stages to review window construction details, suggest glass performance to reduce solar gain, and supply construction R-value calculations for the façade to support the H1 engineer. UNO's in-house team is also handling installation.

  • Client / type: Tuatara Structures (builder), M Three (designer), commercial office
  • Units: 16 (Flushglaze panels, automatic sliding doors, hinge doors)
  • Suite: UNO 150 mm Commercial Flushglaze
  • Glass: Clear Low-E Performatech double glazing
  • Colour: Matt Black powdercoat

Large-volume residential projects in Queenstown

Five Mile Villas, Frankton

Five Mile Villas, Frankton, Queenstown.

Five Mile Villas is a 226-home development in Frankton, Queenstown, delivered in partnership with Designgroup Stapleton Elliott and Gibbons Co.

The challenges included phased completion to tight deadlines, H1 compliance with a skillion roof design, and reliable supply at scale. UNO worked from concept stage on design, value engineering and manufacturing, and its palletised delivery system streamlined transport and reduced on-site labour.

  • Client / type: Designgroup Stapleton Elliott and Gibbons Co, multi-residential (226 homes)
  • Units: 1,920
  • Suite: UNO Thermal
  • Glass: Low-E Lightbridge, argon fill
  • Colour: Matt Flaxpod powdercoat

Lakehouse Villas, Frankton

Lakehouse Villas, Frankton, Queenstown.

Following Five Mile Villas, Designgroup Stapleton Elliott and UNO partnered again on Lakehouse Villas: 63 townhouses in Frankton, Queenstown.

UNO provided detail and specification support so the homes achieve specific H1 construction R-values.

  • Client / type: Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, multi-residential (63 townhouses)
  • Units: 504
  • Suite: UNO Thermal
  • Glass: Low-E, argon fill
  • Colour: Matt Flaxpod powdercoat

The Crest Chalets is a collection of standalone, architecturally designed chalets and cabins at 52 Hansen Road, Frankton, designed by Designgroup Stapleton Elliott and delivered by Gibbons Co.

Early on, UNO supplied initial budgeting, construction R-values, technical files for building consent documentation and detailing support. UNO is planning delivery of the full joinery package.

  • Client / type: Designgroup Stapleton Elliott and GibbonsCo, chalets and cabins
  • Units: 587 planned (fixed and awning windows, hinged doors, French doors)
  • Suite: UNO Thermal
  • Glass: Clear Low-E
  • Colour: Matt Black powdercoat

How UNO delivers to the South Island

Every UNO window and door is manufactured, quality checked, packed and dispatched from one controlled facility in Hāwera. That means a Queenstown or Christchurch site gets the same product quality, communication and delivery preparation as any other UNO project.

UNO uses a palletised shipping solution unique in New Zealand. Before units leave the factory they are grouped, packed and labelled to suit the construction programme, so site teams can see what belongs where. That supports:

  • Efficient delivery to site and unloading
  • Reduced handling on site
  • Better protection during transport
  • Smoother installation sequencing
  • Nationwide delivery coordination

Designing for colder South Island climate zones

Most South Island projects sit in the colder H1 climate zones. Christchurch is climate zone 5 and Queenstown is climate zone 6, so the reference R-values your windows and doors are measured against are higher than in the north:

  • Housing and buildings up to 300 m² (H1/AS1, H1/VM1): reference windows and doors R0.50 in zones 5 and 6, compared with R0.46 in zones 1 to 4.
  • Buildings over 300 m² (H1/AS2, H1/VM2): reference windows and doors R0.40 in zone 5 and R0.42 in zone 6.

The UNO Thermal suite is built for this. With Low-E Lightbridge double glazing, a typical UNO Thermal fixed window (1000 × 1200 mm) reaches R0.65* and a UNO Thermal sliding door (2100 × 2400 mm) reaches R0.60*. UNO recommends Low-E Lightbridge or Low-E Xcel across all climate zones, with Low-E Xtreme or Performatech available to lift the R-value further where a project needs it. For commercial façades, curtain walling (including UNO Commercial 100 mm and 150 mm frames) is modelled under H1/VM1 or H1/VM2, which is where UNO's construction R-value calculations come in, as they did at Sir Gil Simpson Drive and Attika HQ.

*Typical construction R-values from UNO Hub for the stated sizes and configurations, with Low-E Lightbridge double glazing (Ug 1.1, SHGC 0.56) or the UNO door panel. R-values vary with size, configuration, glass and panel. Sign up to UNO Hub to generate the construction R-values for your project.

In-house specification and manufacturing

Distance matters less when one team owns the whole process. Across these South Island projects, UNO's in-house team has provided:

  • Early design and specification support, including configuration advice and value engineering
  • Construction R-values and R-value calculations to support H1 compliance
  • Technical files for building consent documentation and detailed drawings
  • Shop drawings and PS1 documentation on commercial façades
  • Manufacturing and palletised dispatch from UNO's own factory
