Powdercoat finishes

What is a powdercoat finish?

Powdercoating is a process where powdered resin is applied and baked onto the aluminium surface. The application method causes a chemical reaction which results in a high-quality durable finish able to withstand external environments. Powdercoating also gives you a range of colours to choose from to match the design and aesthetics of your project.

Powdercoating is more durable than a standard liquid paint finish and reduces the risk of scratches, chips, corrosion, and fading as it is more resistant to impact, moisture, chemicals, and UV light. The warranty period for powdercoated finish on aluminium windows starts at 10-15 years.

The common colour finishes are matt, satin, or textured. We would recommend matt finish powdercoats for all windows and doors as it is more resilient and marks less than a satin finish Powdercoat.

  • Matt — Matt finish is the most versatile finish. It is more scratch resistant and easier to care for, making it the most popular finish choice for both the production team and the homeowner.
  • Satin — Satin finish colours have a smoother finish with some reflectivity. The satin range has largely been phased out due to the matt finish being more popular. Its smooth surface makes it more susceptible to scratching, visible marks, and fingerprints, as well as being harder to clean. Silver Pearl is the only satin finish colour in our key powdercoat range.
  • Textured — The textured finish, also known as 'Mannex' has a more of a visible stipple than the matt finish. This range was specifically designed for entrance doors as it assists with hiding surface marks, is more resistant to scuffing, and is easier to clean than any other finish.

Choosing your powdercoat colour

Choosing the colour of your windows and doors is a big consideration and we want to make it as simple as possible for all our customers. Here are a few tips to consider when choosing a powdercoat colour to ensure you make the best decision for your project:

  • Do you want the windows and doors to match the cladding or roof colour, or go for a contrast?
  • Think about interior and exterior colour schemes and how they will interact.
  • Also, think about timelessness. A bold colour may be on trend now, but will it look dated down the track?

Key colours

The UNO key colours are New Zealand’s most popular colours for windows and doors, making them a safe and future-proof choice.

You can never go wrong with a neutral window colour which will suit the exterior and blend in with any interior style as trends change over time.

Note: The colours represented on this colour chart are indications only. Due to many variations in computer screens and web browsers, these swatches may not represent the true colour. Where colour is critical, please contact us for powdercoated samples.

Powdercoat care guide

Care and maintenance of your windows and doors

Maintaining the integrity of your powdercoated products is just like caring for your car and is a smart way to protect your investment. Over time, exposure to the elements may cause powdercoatings to show signs of weathering such as loss of gloss, chalking, and slight colour change.

A regular clean will minimise the effects of weathering by removing dirt, grime, and other build-ups that are detrimental to all powdercoatings. The best cleaning method is to regularly wash the coating using a solution of warm water and a nonabrasive, pH-neutral detergent. All surfaces should be cleaned using a soft cloth, sponge, or a soft natural bristle brush and then thoroughly rinsed to remove all residues.
